Roe was the floor, so we took to the sky

Happy pride month!

June is a time for joy and celebration, but the deluge of laws targeting trans kids and efforts toward the full erasure of LGBTQ+ identities in public life have cast a shadow over this year’s festivities for many. These dehumanizing attacks on bodily autonomy and self-determination are intertwined with the ongoing assault on reproductive rights and abortion access, for which this month now also marks a sad anniversary—it has been one year since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

So much has happened in the almost 365 days since the Supreme Court issued its decision in Dobbs vs. Jackson. Thousands of people have lost access to abortion in their states, forcing them to travel. Dozens of clinics have shut their doors entirely, while others have tested their limits as they absorb patients from afar.

But the past year has also shown the enormous power of communities showing up for one another. Practical support organizations have stepped up like never before to help people travel for care, and Apiary has grown by leaps and bounds, expanding our staff, our programs, and our community of practical support partners. Now we are counting on your help to keep this momentum going.

Because we see them trying to stop us and instead insist on keeping going, Apiary is launching a recurring donor campaign! Every donation helps, but recurring donations give us stability. By giving a small amount every month, you can help us better plan for whatever’s next. Please consider making a monthly contribution of any amount to Apiary, and join us for a special event for donors about the future of abortion access next Thursday, June 22nd! (More details below).

This month we’re also spotlighting one of our awesome Hivemind partners that’s quite literally taking to the sky for abortion access and gender-affirming care. Scroll down for more on this amazing organization ✈️

Thank you for standing with us now and for the long haul.

In solidarity,

Executive Director
Apiary for Practical Support

To celebrate our incredible community of supporters, Apiary is hosting a special donors-only virtual panel with guests from the National Committee on Responsive Philanthropy, Fund Texas Choice, Access Reproductive Health, Kentucky Health Justice Network, and Cobalt Advocates to talk about what has gone down in this year since Dobbs, the impact on abortion providers, patients, and practical support organizations, and what happens next.

Partner Spotlight: Elevated Access

Speaking of bodily autonomy and taking to the sky, this Pride month we are so excited to spotlight the work of Elevated Access, a network of volunteer pilots who offer free private flights to people needing to access abortion and gender-affirming care.

A member of Apiary’s Hivemind, Elevated Access works directly with practical support groups to connect with patients in need. Since their first flight one year ago, they have connected with 1,100 volunteer pilots across the country and flown over 100,000 miles to bring patients where it’s safe to get the healthcare they need, as well as clinicians who also need to travel to provide this care.

Follow their inspiring work and donate if you can.
