Celebrating the Black History (and future) that is Reproductive Justice

While I had initially wanted to rush in here with a big “Happy Black History Month!” greeting, I know so many are reeling from the killing of Tyre Nichols (and countless others) at the hands of the police, making this a time of mourning, heartbreak, and outrage.

Apiary stands with abolitionist Black communities calling for justice for Tyre and his family, and we look to their collective vision for a world without policing, racist state violence, and white supremacy in all forms—a world in which everyone can, in the words of SisterSong, “maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.”

In the spirit of this vision—literally the definition of Reproductive Justice (RJ) —we are excited to finally share with you the very first installment of Apiary’s new Resource Library, all about RJ. You can find out more about the whole project in the section below!
You can also join us in signing on to the Visioning New Futures for Reproductive Justice Declaration 2023, which was created by RJ leaders just last month on what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Individuals and organizations are invited to sign.

This month we are also celebrating the Black leaders in our movement who are making history every day. Today, we are delighted to dedicate our Partner Spotlight to our friends at Reprocare. Scroll down to learn all about this incredible organization and how you can support their work.

In solidarity,

Marisa Falcon
Executive Director

P.S. ICYMI, and in case you don’t follow us on social media (yet), Apiary is hiring - we currently have *three* roles open - an Executive Assistant (closes Friday!), a Hivemind Manager and an RFP for strategic planning. You can find all the listings on our news page. 🐝

Presenting Apiary’s New Resource Library!

In service of our mission to be a hub for resources for practical support organizations and their wider communities, we’ve been developing a Resource Library full of readings and other media about a range of topics related to abortion, which anyone will be able to access on our website. Today we are excited to officially launch Phase One, Part One: Reproductive Justice.
Throughout the month, we’re going to be adding more to the library - follow our Instagram to learn when each new Part goes live!

They’ll include:

  • Economic Justice + Reproductive Justice

  • Climate Justice + Reproductive Justice

  • Midwifery & Doulas

This is just the beginning - future installments of our Resource Library will include the history of abortion, collective liberation movements, abortion access and the role of practical support organizations, access and disability, and medical facts related to contraception, later abortion care, and gender bias.

Partner spotlight: Reprocare

This month we are thrilled to lift up the work of Reprocare, a reproductive justice organization doing incredible client support work that Apiary has the privilege to partner with in our technical assistance coalition and practical support Hivemind community.

Co-founded by Morgan Love and Phoebe Abramowitz, Reprocare has been providing compassionate, trauma-informed emotional support, medical information, and referrals to people having abortions since 2020. Their anonymous Helpline, staffed by volunteers who take calls and texts 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, has been an invaluable resource—in particular for callers who are managing an abortion at home.

And recently, in partnership with Midwest Access Coalition, Reprocare has developed the perfectly named Project Piggy Bank, which is a hub for technology and digital resources that facilitate abortion funding, including solidarity funding (when multiple funds pitch in for one client). Project Piggy Bank is making it SO MUCH EASIER to connect the various providers and funds who need to send and receive funds online, greatly reducing the burden on patients to navigate communication and the transfer of funds from several different organizations. (Clinics, funds, and practical support groups—you can sign up right here to start using this resource!)

If you’d like to support Reprocare’s critical work, you can do two things:

  1. Refer callers! If you know anyone who is managing an abortion at home, let them know that they can call or text the Reprocare Healthline for information and support at (833) 226-7821.

  2. And you can always make a donation here.

Thanks for all you do, Reprocare!
