Statement on FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine
We are relieved that the Supreme Court has voted to keep mifepristone, a safe and effective drug that has been approved by the FDA for more than two decades, on the market. This means that medication abortion will still be available.
But let's be clear: this case never should have made it before the Court in the first place. And this "win" won't help reverse the abortion access crisis in this country. Sixteen states have total or near-total abortion bans in effect. Medication abortion seekers in those states must either travel out of state, potentially thousands of miles, to simply take a series of pills, or risk possible criminalization by ignoring their state's unjust bans. We also know that a ruling based on standing (which is to say - the legitimacy of a party to bring a case) means that they are paving the way for another case to come from someone else who will allow them to undermine this medication. This is hardly a victory.
Apiary is a national hub for groups that provide logistical assistance to abortion seekers and we know that the abortion access crisis won't be undone by a single Supreme Court ruling. It's the grassroots organizations that we work with and support that will solve this crisis. We will continue to stand with them.
